Modular Data Centres

Cerulean is the client-side project manager for a specialist modular data centre provider, delivering prefabricated data centre modules for customers around the world.

Once a project leaves pre-sales and the customer has committed, Cerulean takes it through the full delivery life cycle; design, procurement, manufacture, construction and installation, commissioning and handover to the end customer.

Modular data centres promise speed, and the promise only holds if every part of the chain keeps pace. The modules are designed and built in a factory, so the critical path runs across the design team, the fabrication floor, the supply chain, international freight and a site that needs to be ready on the day the module arrives (with the crane booked and the power on). Our role is to make sure those things line up, project after project, across several sites and jurisdictions at once.

Scope of Work

Design management. We coordinate the design from the customer's requirements through to approved-for-construction documentation. That covers the module itself and the site works, including foundations, power and fibre connections, and the local approvals each site needs.

Procurement. We manage the procurement of long-lead equipment, subcontractors and site trades. Ordering and delivery dates are set against the manufacturing programme, so an item that arrives late can't hold up a finished module.

Manufacture and logistics. We track fabrication progress, factory testing and quality hold points, then plan freight, customs and site delivery around the readiness of each location.

Construction and installation. We manage site establishment, civil and electrical works, module placement and the connection of power and communications. Work health and safety, quality and programme stay under close control throughout.

Commissioning and handover. We coordinate testing and commissioning with the delivery team and the customer. Handover documentation, as-builts and close-out are complete before the facility is accepted.

Client representation. We act as the provider's representative to its end customers. They get one consistent point of contact and clear reporting at every stage.

Rather than running each deployment as a standalone job, we manage the work as a portfolio, with centralised programme, cost, risk and stakeholder reporting. That lets the provider deliver several projects at once across different markets without any one site taking attention from the others.
